Tips for Online Learning

1. Prepare

Do you own your own computer or have reliable access to the Internet? Plan ahead to make sure you have the correct technology and take time to become familiar with your software. Take advantage of online tutorials provided on the Moodle login page and through your instructors.

2. Participation

Be an active, involved and independent learner. Review the course syllabus at the beginning of the course and return to it often to seek answers to questions you may have.

3. Commitment

Treat your online course as you would a face-to-face course.

  1. Schedule time to ‘attend’ class online every day and STICK TO IT.
  2. Share your online class schedule with your family, friends and/or work so
    that they may help you keep on track.
  3. Be willing to commit 10-15 hours per week per course.
4. Motivation

Anticipate obstacles in your personal schedule and communicate with your instructor.  You may be able to work ahead or find a workable solution to keep pace with your course and not fall behind.

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!  Both you and your instructor will be logging into the course at different times, anticipate time delays in the responses from your instructor and others in the class.

5. Ask questions

It is likely that your question is shared by others in the class. If technical problems come up, do not put off dealing with them.

6. Did you know?
  • Most online courses are NOT self-paced.
  • Online courses at ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ»ÆƬ are offered as full semester courses.
  • Online courses may require textbooks. Contact the UMW Campus Bookstore for details.
  • Your instructor may require chat sessions or other real time activities.
  • DO NOT leave questions, assignments or tests to the last minute. Emailing your instructor at 11:57 p.m. for a midnight due date is not an effective strategy.
  • Workload in an online class is generally the same as a face-to-face class.
  • Use a calendar to post deadlines.
